Interview with Steve Holley, St. Louis, MO
What Fantasy Sports do you play?
Football, baseball and horse racing are the primary sports we play.
The challenge is not beating the other guys..the challenge is finding the edge in the contest…either in the rules, how you play or how you execute the game.
Everybody can pick teams…its how you put together and take advantage that gets you the cash.
How did you get involved in playing Fantasy Sports?
I got involved with fantasy sports as an over the hill ex-athlete who still coaches…but can’t play the way I did when I was younger. Its always everybody’s dream to second guess and say “Why didn’t they do it this way..or why didn’t the pick up that guy!” Involvement with fantasy sports give s you the opportunity to have fun, be the boss, take risks…and have no consequences. If you’re right…you are a genius…if wrong…deny involvement…I don’t play those silly games!
How long have you been playing Fantasy Sports?
Mark and I have played Fantasy Sports since their inception. We wont he first USA Today Baseball challenge..which was a national contest with over 10,000 players…back in the early 90’s.
How did you pick players and teams?
We pick our players and teams based on value, scheduling, gut reactions, many years of being involved in the sports we play and based on going against the general public…..its easy to pick Barry Bonds…but how do you find two guys to equal Barry and somebody else when you have values placed on players.
Do you play with people you know?
In most contests we enter..we do well…whether it is local, national or a group of guys getting together….we’re pretty competitive and we also have a lot of fun plotting strategy.
Have you played for prizes, money or recognition?
We play to win for cash and prizes…recognition doesn’t pay the rent or the entry fees!
What do you see in the future for Fantasy Sports?
The future should bring on more sophistication. technology has advanced from a group of guys sitting around to live interaction nationwide during games. That is huge. It opens new friendships, more competition and the opportunity to win more prizes and cash. Its only going to get better. Ex-jocks love to think about their sports and how they can make it better….fantasy sports offers a great way to be involved with low risk and high reward.
